I am OBSESSED with my hair people. It's the healthiest relationship I have. I spend more time on my hair than I spend on any other part of my body because it's important to me that it's healthy.

Haha, I like how I just outed myself; "fuck exercising, my hair is more important".

But I'm sure I'm not the only woman (or man) that feels that way...

Anyway, I've been growing out my curly hair for almost two years now. I love going on Youtube and watching tutorials on ways to keep it moisturized, combat split ends and stuff like that. And I have a whole folder of pics of women called my "Hairspiration Box"(which I've written about before). Nothing motivates me more than seeing someone with a head of big hair.

That's why I'm loving Urbanbushbabes.com.I discovered the site after browsing besties Cipriana and Nikisha's hair videos on Youtube.

The two ladies write about their hair journeys, and give great tips on getting the best hair ever. EVER.

Both women take turns posting which is great because they have different hair types and therefore different hair regimens.

Cipriana and Nikisha aren't only rocking some enviable tresses, they are super-cute!

I love their style, I love their personalities, I love their site. Love love love.

Dianna Agron is rocking a new bob cut and Chord Overstreet's went over to the dark side. So for those freaking out, chill. They're on break from Glee, hair grows back and people have been getting a head of sun kissed tresses with the help of peroxide for years.

It's all going to be okay.

JMO but Really a Simple Fact: Black Women ARE Capable of Having Healthy Natural Hair

So I really hate the fact that I feel obligated to discuss this (it is 2011 after all) but I felt the need to add my two cents to a topic currently being discussed on black gossip sites.

So Tiffany "New York" Pollard from "Win a Date with Flava Flav", or whatever the show was called, recently posed for some photos as one of the celebrity faces of Image Cosmetics. The makeup was refreshingly understated but all eyes were on her full head of curls.

It looked cute and different and so much better than those horrendous wigs she used to rock so it must be fake.

So it really irritated me when I read some of the comments coming from readers on a black website:

"Natural looking afro wig. #yawn#"

"It's a wig..."

" Yeah right. notice she talks about a natural "look" and not her natural "hair". what girl rocking her natural hair talks about the "look"?!? it's all about the hair baby and that is clearly not hers.

She still looks nice with it though."

Because God knows there is no way she (a black woman) could decide to stop using a relaxer and grow her hair out to the healthy looking head of curls she's rocking.

Okay, I have nothing against wigs but I find it sad that black women seem to think it's an impossibility for someone to have pretty hair without using a relaxer or fake hair. It says a lot about our culture and none of those things are good. I didn't bother posting the more negative comments.

For the record, New York has been natural under her wigs for years.

If someone was curious about black women's natural hair, all they would have to do is go on Youtube. There are plenty of women of all shades and hair textures with big ol' afros.

Black on black hate is so lame.

JMO.

Men Really Love Hair and Other Mini Revelations

So I was at this event when A*, this guy I went on a date with a couple of months ago, walked right past me.

“Hey A!”

He turned around, did a double take and walked over to me.

“Hey J. I didn’t recognize you.”

“I cut my hair.”

“Oh, oh… why?”

Strike One.

“Um, you know I just wanted a change. You know, do something different”

“Okay, okay. Well it’s, it’s” A looked at my head like he was looking for a bird’s nest. Maybe he was looking for an appropriate adjective? Or maybe an escape route? “It’s different”.

It’s different? A just spent the last thirty seconds looking for a word and he settled for different.

Strike Two.

“Yeah well change is good. And it’s hair so it’ll grow back.”

“Yeah but it’s going to take a long time!”

Strike Three.

I know hair is a big deal for guys but dang, you’d think I grew facial hair or something.

Anyway lovelies, I cut my hair!

You like? It’s okay if you don't , I wasn’t crazy about it a month ago. But it’s grown a bit and I’m kind of stuck with it so oh well.

A while ago, I wrote a post about my obsession with curls. I went to the Mackage show in February, interviewed Tippi Shorter, saw her head of sexy tendrils and decided my flat strands were the worst thing in my life. So I stopped relaxing it. Determined to transition back to my natural hair without chopping everything off like I did the previous THREE times (yeah, I’m no stranger to a pair of scissors), I did lots of braidouts, lots and lots of braidouts. I lasted eight months before I got scissor happy.

And now I look like a boy.

I kidd.

Sorta.

What do you guys think of the cut?

Is "different" boy-code for "unforgivably hideous"?

Am I the only one who thinks A should have gone with "you're still cute as a button and totally dateable with or without hair you witty, lovely, sexy minx"?

I Like Curls, Curls, Curls, Curls

I’m an obsessive compulsive nerd.

This is charming to most people so it’s okay. But I know how abnormal it is to literally spend hours thinking about the most frivolous, unimportant things. I blame this on an overactive imagination and too much time spent entertaining myself as a child. Yes this is your fault mom and dad.

That was my disclaimer. On to the post!

So as I mentioned earlier, I got to go backstage at the Mackage show for fashion week. It was awesome, I had a great time and I got to interview Tippi Shorter!!!! Yes, I got to interview the lady who gives Alicia Keys every hairstyle I’ve ever coveted.

If you read the interview, you know I told her I was her hair stalker. Well I didn’t include the ten minute badgering that proceeded. I saw Tippi’s head of sexy, structured curls and I. Had. To. Have. Them.

Lucky for me, Tippi is as nice as they come and she answered all my questions about her style secrets. But I wasn’t satisfied. Seeing Tippi’s hair made me miss my curls. I have conveniently forgotten how hard it was to manage them.

All I know is I WANT CURLY HAIR AGAIN. I love curly hair. I do! What can I say? It’s epic. And straight hair is so boring to me now.

Just look at the photo of us above. Tippi: rockstar. Me: yawn.

So now I’m having a curly hair moment. These “moments” occur about every two years for me (last time it was a Josephine Baker moment).

I went home that day and proceeded to create my curly hair box because that’s what I do when I plan; I create virtual boxes. I now have 300 photos of curly haired girls for inspiration and I’m growing my relaxer out (some of the photos below are from the box). I might as well because I don’t trust anyone but my hairdresser in Orlando anyway.

I cannot wait for the weather to stop being a bipolar hot mess so I can premiere my curly hair for my spring/ summer look.

Yes, I have moments and looks.

Don’t judge me.

I’m calling it my Summer2010 Penny Lane Hippie Chic Bohemian African Princess look. Obviously, I’ve put a lot of thought into it.

When I have successfully achieved this look, I’ll share photos.
